April Showers Snows.
Spring is springing here on the farm, and the signs are all around us! Most varieties of apples have already broken their buds, with green tips now peeking through. Pears and stone fruits are also making their presence known, showing off their yellow and green tissue as they push through the initial bud swell stage. While grapes are typically one of the last fruiting plants to break bud, they're still safely nestled away for now.
It's been a busy time for us here, Winter pruning for the apples is nearly complete, and our focus shifting to the grapes. If you happened to wander by, you might have caught us in the midst of some vigorous pruning – after all, we like to keep things nice and trim around here. But rest assured, those trellises will soon be adorned with lush, green grape leaves.
This year, it seems like spring has arrived a bit ahead of schedule, with our farm running about a week early compared to previous seasons. However, we're not letting our guard down just yet, as overnight temperatures can still pose a risk to fruit buds. We're keeping a close watch, knowing that fruit buds should be safe down to around 22 degrees Fahrenheit until early bloom.
Late-season snow helped delay the development of our plants, but unfortunately, it didn't stick around for long, leaving us with a messy, muddy landscape. And speaking of nature's balancing act, we recently had the opportunity to witness the solar eclipse. Despite being outside the path of totality, we were treated to a spectacular 98% coverage. Around 200 cars made their way to Vista of Maine to witness the dance between the sun and the moon. While we didn't experience the same level of frenzy as those in the path of totality, it was still a sight to behold. Thankfully, no one ended up getting stuck in the mud!
As we move forward, we anticipate a fruitful season ahead, with apple bloom expected around May 17th, give or take a few days. Mother Nature always has a way of balancing things out, and we're excited to see what the springtime holds for our farm. Although we anticipate that this season may bring its own surprises, with nature always keeping us on our toes.
